Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, She & Him’s Zooey Deschanel Engaged : Rolling Stone : Rock and Roll Daily

Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and She & Him singer-actress Zooey Deschanel are engaged, a source close to the couple tells Us. The couple are “so thrilled,” the source says, “Zooey was swept off her feet, and Ben is so excited.” To be honest, we didn’t even know Zooey and Ben were an item, and apparently neither did the rest of the media: The announcement came just hours after a false report saying Deschanel was engaged to AFI bassist Hunter Burgan, who immediately denied the reports.

In the end, it was revealed it was Gibbard and not Burgan who is engaged to the Elf actress.
According to some Websites, the couple have been dating for almost a year. In the past, Deschanel has dated artists like actor-drummer-Coconut Records dude Jason Schwartzman and Maroon 5’s Mickey Madden, but it was Gibbard that ultimately, in the words of BeyoncĂ©’s Best Single of ‘08, put a ring on it. While they managed to keep their relationship out of the spotlight, Gibbard and Deschanel have shared the stage on at least one occasion, performing the Everly Brothers’ “All I Have To Do Is Dream” at an Obama fundraiser in August.

Mariah Carey told off by Scientists for E=MC2 claims | News | NME.COM

Mathematicians unhappy with new interpretation of Einstein equation

Scientists have criticised Mariah Carey\'s mathematics skills, after she appropriated Albert Einstein\'s mass-energy equivalence formula for an album title.

The singer called her recent album \'E=MC2\', but rather than reference the famous equation, she declared the tile stood for \"emancipation equals Mariah Carey times two\".

Mathematician Dr David Leslie told BBC News that he was upset that the singer had had \"misread the algebra\".

\"The \'two\' in the equation means C squared, not MC multiplied by two,\" he explained. \"The correct reading of the equation is E=MCC, so perhaps Mariah\'s re-interpretation should have been \'emancipation equals Mariah Carey Carey\'?\"

Carey has not commented on her slip-up, but she was one of several celebrities pulled up by charity Sense About Science about their misleading \"scientific\" claims.

RIAA’s Gaze Turns From Users to ISPs in Piracy Fight : Rolling Stone : Rock and Roll Daily

RIAA’s Gaze Turns From Users to ISPs in Piracy Fight

12/19/08, 3:30 pm EST

After suing more than 35,000 people for illegally sharing music online since September 2003, the Recording Industry Association of America has canceled its much-publicized lawsuit campaign. The RIAA will instead work with Internet service providers to identify and contact — and sometimes penalize — users who continue to trade copyrighted music.

“We’re faced with the reality of ‘this shit isn’t working.’ And legally the ground is getting shakier in terms of winning these lawsuits. And it’s costing money,” says a major-label source familiar with the lawsuit discussions. “So, time to move on.”

The RIAA, a trade association that represents the world’s biggest record labels, has made headlines for suing 13-year-old Brianna LaHara as well as a multitude of students, flight attendants, engineers and karaoke DJs over five years. But while the RIAA insisted the lawsuits were crucial for educating customers that file-sharing is illegal, they haven’t reduced piracy, according to BigChampagne.com numbers.

Some at labels have recently been vocal about stopping the lawsuits, notably Warner Music chairman Edgar Bronfman Jr. Album sales have dropped from 636 million in 2003 to 585 million last year — and another 14 percent in 2008, according to Nielsen Soundscan. Eventually, the major-label source says, it became obvious even to the most aggressive lawsuit supporters that the lawsuits weren’t worth pursuing. “It probably started when they started looking at budgets for the coming year,” he adds. “There was an acknowledgement, finally — ‘where are we headed with this program? Piracy hasn’t decreased.’ Everybody realized this was making us the most hated industry since the tobacco industry. Everybody got to the same place at a different time.” RIAA reps would not be quoted for this story, but agreed to confirm certain details.

Although pending litigation will continue, the recording industry agreed to stop new lawsuits after working with Andrew Cuomo, New York’s attorney general, and unidentified ISPs throughout the fall. Under the new plan, copyright owners will send infringement notices to ISPs, who will in turn notify their users — and possibly sanction them if they don’t respond to numerous messages. “It’s a great thing,” says Charles Lee Mudd, a Chicago attorney who has represented more than 100 people sued by the RIAA. “Many of my clients did not know what they were doing was illegal. Many thought they were safe or fine. Had they learned otherwise, they would have ceased immediately.”

Arctic Monkeys 'could finish new album this month' | News | NME.COM

Matt Helders reveals more details on the follow-up to \'Favourite Worst Nightmare\'

Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders has said the band could finish their new album this month (November).

As NME.COM previously reported, the band recently completed sessions for the album with Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme at his Joshua Tree studio.

Now Helders has told The Guardian that the band could complete the album this month - although they aren\'t putting any time limits on themselves.

\"We\'re gonna do a bit more recording next month [November] and then we\'ll probably be in here [the band\'s rehearsal space] for most of December getting ready to go out again,\" he said.

\"We made a start on [the album] a few weeks ago and we\'re gonna go back and try and finish it off. That\'ll be two blocks of two weeks. It\'s probably do-able for us to finish it in this next block. But we don\'t want to put pressure on by saying, \'we\'ve got to finish it this time\'.\"

weird night

crazy night...its a school night here. I just watched United 93. that movie really got my heart pumping. it was very sad and very frightening, especially knowing that it is true. I just pictured myself in those situations, on the plane, in a command center, in a air traffic control tower, in the world trade center. what a shock. your life is over suddenly. you have to give up...well they didnt quite give up on that plane but it was quite an effort.

But what got me most was the clash of cultures. both cultures thinking they are doing the right thing, doing it for God....who is right...we're all right. This movie really illustrated some points. The coldness of beurocracy and how the system stops us from really getting anything done. the great age of technology we live in that complicates everything while making it all more conveinent. but the big thing is, we're all the same humans, trying to survive here on this planet. We are all doing what we think is best for ourselves, our family, our town, our state, our nation, our culture. But what about our world??

Our generation is the generation that better make room for everyone because we have grown up with access to the most information out of any generation before us, it's our responsibility to use it wisely. We can see all perspectives more clearly now. Its time for more sympathy.

That movie made me very sad and a started doing a song right after it. Just feeling what it was about inside me....and i got something a like a lot, something more artistic than the pop music i usually go for.

But the creepiest thing was after I had arranged the track on a one-take dj arrangement..i left it a lone (fixed 2 minor issues) but then decided to put a radiohead vocal track on top of it that i got from their remix website..thinking, hmm i wonder if its in the same key...

Not only was it in the same key, it fit perfect to the song..it freaked the hell out of me. the vocals were all on beat, they got more expressive when my song did...it was all pretty magical. So at least now I have a remix I'm proud of for one of my favorite bands ever. And i can enter it into the contest.

Man what a weird night.

goodnight.

WHAT? what in the hell is wrong with Idaho?!

'Pro-Life' gets name on ballot this year

TREASURE VALLEY — A Gem County farmer who legally changed his name to Pro-Life will get that name on the ballot for Idaho’s U.S. Senate race this year.

State officials would not let Pro-Life, formerly Marvin “Pro-Life” Richardson, use his middle name on the ballot when he ran for governor in 2006. Secretary of State officials said the state’s policy prohibits slogans from being on the ballot.

But this year Pro-Life, a 66-year-old organic strawberry farmer from Letha, is running for U.S. Sen. Larry Craig’s seat as an independent. And because his full and only name is Pro-Life, the Secretary of State has no choice but to put it on the ballot.

Having the words “Pro-Life” on the ballot may confuse people and hurt the pro-life movement, the executive director of Idaho Chooses Life said. But Pro-Life himself considers the situation a victory for pro-lifers. He says he will run for the highest Idaho office on the ballot every two years for the rest of his life.

“I think it’s just and I think it’s proper,” to have “Pro-Life” on the ballot, Pro-Life said. “If I save one baby’s life, it’s worth it.”

Idaho Chooses Life executive director David Ripley fears voters will think Pro-Life on the ballot is a position and not a candidate, and that they may vote for Pro-Life instead of a more viable pro-life candidate. He also said people could vote for Pro-Life and a pro-life candidate in the U.S. Senate race, thereby nullifying their vote because they cast two votes for one office.

“I’m pretty concerned about it,” Ripley said. “I think that could cause a lot of confusion out there ... (It’s) more likely to undermine the pro-life movement by having a lot of pro-life votes discounted.”

Ripley said he knows and respects Pro-Life, but there is already a clear choice for voters for the U.S. Senate in pro-life candidate Lt. Gov. Jim Risch, a Republican, and pro-choice candidate Larry LaRocco, a Democrat.

Pro-Life got less than 2 percent of the vote when he ran for governor. He said his new name could bring him 5 percent of the vote. He will not be on the ballot until November unless another independent candidate runs in his race in the May 27 primary.

Pro-Life’s wife, independent Kirsten Faith Richardson, is running for the District 11 state Senate seat.

Pro-Life holds strong views on abortion. He said doctors who perform abortions and women who get abortions should be charged with murder. He also said the pro-life movement should use the word “murder” whenever referring to abortion.

“Marvin is of the opinion that shock and awe is the way to wake people up to what’s happening,” Ripley said. “I don’t particularly share that view.”

But Idaho Values Alliance executive director Bryan Fischer said Pro-Life might be ahead of his time.

“He may take issues that are more extreme than a lot of pro-lifers would take,” Fischer said, “but I think decades from now we’re going to look back and think that he was pretty close to the mark.”

Pro-Life’s being a one-issue candidate, or being perceived as a one-issue candidate, will hurt his campaign, Fischer said. But Pro-Life said he takes stances on other issues, too. He said he thinks there should be laws against homosexuality, adultery and fornication. And he calls tax collection for public schools “collective theft.”

McCain says some dumb shit...Obama thinks sharing is caring..McCain must hate sharing

Obama explained his tax plan in depth, saying it’s better to lower taxes for Americans who make less money, so that they could afford to buy from his business. John McCain attacked Obama for this exchange, saying the Illinois senator is trying to “spread the wealth around.”

One of my favorite comedians and snl cast member gets to take over my favorite talk-show host's tv show!!!!

Jimmy Fallon to take over for Conan O'Brien in '09

Jimmy Fallon, as previously reported, will take over for Conan O'Brien when the red-headed comedian makes his long-planned move into Jay Leno's seat at The Tonight Show. NBC made the deal official at a press conference today with Fallon and exec producer Lorne Michaels. Further details were in short supply, from Fallon's contract length and salary ("I keep asking Lorne, and he keeps telling me not to worry about it," Fallon cracked) to show specifics and the key question of when the transition will take place. "Sometime in '09," hedged Michaels, who'll produce both O'Brien's and Fallon's shows. "Probably the first six months. Maybe the second six."

Why so cagey about the exact date? The net's still negotiating to keep Leno in the family and avoid having late-night's most-successful host be most-successful at another net. Co-chairman of NBC Entertainment Ben Silverman told EW.com that doing so could involve primetime, cable, syndication, or some combination thereof. "We love Jay and want to keep him around," Silverman reiterated.

Fallon, meanwhile, promised to make his "the best show for everyone to fall asleep during" and said he's been doing standup lately to get into practice. "We're not going to reinvent the wheel," he said of the show's format. "But when Conan took over for Letterman, he wasn't Letterman. Oh, and all the furniture will be suspended six feet in the air."

THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME...I'll be able to sit on my couch for 2 hours straight, EVERY NIGHT!! and on thursdays, with Lost and the Office..thats like 4 hours..omg people get me a LIFE!

We go back there in dreams (another poem by me)

late night rythms of voices
we never ran out of conversation
as we inflict small doses of adulthood onto eachother
the room grows more silent

eyes on everyone
waiting for the slip-up
all the while wishing we could go back
to real freedom
before we knew it all, we had everything
everything we really needed

it happens in dreams still
and it gives me hope for the future
but those moments are far to rare these days

the laughter, the bright eyes,
the tastes and flavors.
the anticipation, the first-times
the delight and tingle of fear

we craved to become this
and we want it all back
because we let it go to soon
because we couldnt read the time
until it was too late

it was a great ocassion
we didn't expect to much
we loved just to love
we didn't have to hide or show off
the balance was in the air
and the future was wide open
and our eyes could see for ever
our mouths said new things in hopeful voices
our minds moved all the time
time was nothing

we go back there in dreams

Things we never see

this is a new video from Radiohead. thank goodness there's still a band out there using their voice for something good like social change.

Saturday, May 3, 2008

The New Death Cab single is 8 minutes long.

The new death cab single is 8 minutes long. They are one of my favorite bands, and even I was skeptical about the song being so long..I mean, in the age of the Ipod, who is going to stay on this song for more than 2 minutes before skipping to another track? It's the same loop over and over.

But I've listened to it about 4 times, I'll admit I was bored a little the first few times but then you realize...it is therapy.

It stands apart from the fast-paced music of pop radio but is still very catchy. The song builds on itself and if you actually listen to it while driving or alone or something, you get a better sense of what i'm talking about. It puts you in a groove and snaps you out of it just at the right time. And with so much crap floating everywhere (pretty much everyone makes music now), I am glad that Death Cab made a point of not producing more white noise...and it's good to be different sometimes.

Oh, and don't forget thier album comes out a week from tuesday, Here's the Video:

2 new poems i wrote

rubber stamps
papers fly by
engines start
someone breaks a heart

and I sit
in this state
is it hate?
no
is it fate?
and I wait to find out
the path I was supposed to take after the chance was
gone

A bicycle rides along
cities crumble from war
mochas are ordered, light on the cream please
an ocean envelops an island

and I still feel stuck
3,000 pounds staring at clouds
like, why can't humans fly?
greater expectations than I should have?
to high?

my aim is off?

another Nobel peace prize is given out
will man conquer mortality before
I am gone?
so I can buy enough time to finally
become?

become me?
or become what I think I see in me?
or just
me

Is that the wrong way to phrase that?
"just me?"
maybe they are the same
the best things in life are free
so am I the worst because I don't feel
free

Items are returned
Top Raman is cooked
presidents elected
and the same sun rises
and my eyes search for
new surprises

by Micah Smith

--------------------------------------------------------------------
A window on an ocean
just the waves
a view of you
you wave, your hair
it waves

wind blows and that door opens again
a wish coming true
these things never happen to me
a door always closes

you smile
I pick it apart
make the jokes
you search for my heart
I search your eyes
looking for your ocean
is it fear I see
that's what I usually see

under the skin
maybe it's all me I see
putting it on you
you don't deserve that
if it's true

like the waves
you say goodbye with the moon
a well-spent day
tv, food
and everything we wanted to say

still in
the air

I have to leave to let it clear
remembering your hair
eyes, it never actually leaves
never easy

recent american past

When the World Ended as We Knew It

by Joy Harjo

We were dreaming on an occupied island at the farthest edge
of a trembling nation when it went down.

Two towers rose up from the east island of commerce and touched
the sky. Men walked on the moon. Oil was sucked dry
by two brothers. Then it went down. Swallowed
by a fire dragon, by oil and fear.
Eaten whole.

It was coming.

We had been watching since the eve of the missionaries in their
long and solemn clothes, to see what would happen.

We saw it
from the kitchen window over the sink
as we made coffee, cooked rice and
potatoes, enough for an army.

We saw it all, as we changed diapers and fed
the babies. We saw it,
through the branches
of the knowledgeable tree
through the snags of stars, through
the sun and storms from our knees
as we bathed and washed
the floors.

The conference of the birds warned us, as the flew over
destroyers in the harbor, parked there since the first takeover.
It was by their song and talk we knew when to rise
when to look out the window
to the commotion going on—
the magnetic field thrown off by grief.

We heard it.
The racket in every corner of the world. As
the hunger for war rose up in those who would steal to be president
to be king or emperor, to own the trees, stones, and everything
else that moved about the earth, inside the earth
and above it.

We knew it was coming, tasted the winds who gathered intelligence
from each leaf and flower, from every mountain, sea
and desert, from every prayer and song all over this tiny universe
floating in the skies of infinite
being.

And then it was over, this world we had grown to love
for its sweet grasses, for the many-colored horses
and fishes, for the shimmering possibilities
while dreaming.

But then there were the seeds to plant and the babies
who needed milk and comforting, and someone
picked up a guitar or ukulele from the rubble
and began to sing about the light flutter
the kick beneath the skin of the earth
we felt there, beneath us

a warm animal
a song being born between the legs of her;
a poem.

it's by Judd Apatow, the same guy who made SUperbad, Knocked up and the rest of 'em. it has some of the same actors from his other movies, such as Jonah Hill.

You gotta see it folks. I thought it was as good as superbad...well maybe almost somewhat. it was frickin great though!!! yes!! (there's a few hot girls in it also)

That Sly Fox

from MoveOn.org

White Problems - Should children drink wine?

Article from a great blog I recently found: Stuff White People Like

Stuff White People Like examines the issue: Should white children be allowed to drink wine?

Yes:

White people need to learn about wine as soon as possible. Not learning until college puts them at an inherent disadvantage to Europeans and white children raised abroad. It is strongly recommended that children learn about wine regions, vintages, terroir, and tannins in elementary school to give them that all important leg up when they reach college.

Being able to declare “my favorite wine as a child” in a conversation is recognized as more impressive than stories about extended visits to wine regions. In fact, it can only be topped by a story about opening your own vineyard.

No:

White people also enjoy binge drinking.

Final Call:

White children should drink wine. They should not be allowed to drink beer or other “party” liquors.

An article that I read this morning...

General Betray Us? Of course he has. MoveOn.org can hardly be expected to recycle its slogan from last September, when General David Petraeus testified in support of escalating the US war in Iraq, given the hysterical denunciations that worthy group received at the time. But it was right then--as it would be to repeat the charge now.

By undercutting the widespread support for getting out of Iraq, Petraeus did indeed betray the American public, siding with an enormously unpopular President who wants to stay the course in Iraq for personal and political reasons that run contrary to genuine national security interests.

Long-time friends

One of my favorite things are the friends in life that you've had for years and years. After being around them for such a long time it sometimes seems that nothing you could ever do will mess up the bond you share with each other. I just hate when stuff gets in the way of that bond. You sit there and hope it won't last for long. That security is great. But thats all for today. Just a little observation and something to think about.

It's boring but it's my life.

Sunday, March 30, 2008

Its sad that we'll never get the past back. sitting as a kid on my living room floor, hearing the radio, Sting, The Cranberries, Natalie Merchant, Hootie and the Blowfish. I hear those songs now and it brings back the sweetest feeling ever. I love that feeling. And I'm always afraid if i listen to those songs too much, i will eventually loose that feeling and in-turn, make it even more difficult to access my wonderful memories.

Memories of simpleness. Of bliss, no matter what. Is it fiction? As children are we just naturally happy in the end? Is the anger or other feelings we feel as kids just a facade or an imitation of our parents? are we really perfect and content until we grow up? Are all these "problems" of ours that surface during the teenage years just us "playing" ourselves as we've learned to be by imitating our parents? are we doing the best to act like ourselves or are we really trying to be happy?

If that is true, where does this angst originate from? our parents? but what if they modeled themselves after their parents? so maybe it all started with our grandparents...but that's based on nothing because back in the early 1900's people still had personal problems with depression, love, relationships, loneliness..i mean, read Shakespeare, Socrates, the Bible even, those feelings have been around as long as man has. I don't have to tell you that. so where does happiness come from? where does manic depression come from?

Going back to my previous point, I do think that children are mostly pure and innocent..but right when they are born parents immediately are the role model that babies have to take after to survive. We pick up on our parent's habits and ways of life, and ways of communicating. I think it is just much easier to be happy and content when you are a kid because ignorance simply is bliss.

I also believe that looking back now (i am 21) we are conscious of life passing by and conscious of ourselves and our self-critiquing is at an all-time high during the teenage years. after going through all that, childhood is going to seem like the best time ever. Just think in 10 years from now, the present will probably look pretty good (if you are my age). I've heard that people say their 20's and high school days are the best of their life. And i wonder what they think of their childhood. I never hear people older than me talking about it. Maybe it's easier to forget your childhood because memories aren't thought about as much as a kid, you weren't as conscious of life going by. and maybe when you don't consider yourself young anymore, that's when a person thinks they have seen it all. when the novelty of life wears off perhaps? Does it wear off for all people? Does it wear off for people ever?

Some of this stuff doesn't really matter right now. It's better to live instead of analyze it all while it's passing by in my opinion. But it sure is good to hear those melodies that bring back the best, sweetest memories of my childhood. I can even feel certain songs from high school really starting to mean a lot to me. I began to wonder if songs I'm listening to right now would just feel beautiful in ten years. So i make mix cds according to what I'm listening to or what is new and popular that month...it's an audio scrapbook of memories. It's boring but it's my life.
